Ceiba

We just got back from three nights on the coast, partly to run errands, mostly to get off Utila for a bit.

On the ferry.  I was concentrating on not losing my oatmeal.

Gussy, checking out the baahs at Carrion department store.

He was overwhelmed.  Such selection!

Thursday morning we went to Cuero y Salado, a nature preserve outside of town.

You take a tiny train to the river.  It is fun.

Manatee

This pretty little guy befriended me

Ha, ha!

Wait, you're serious?

Always ready for adventure:  John Arne Løken

Our trusty guide, Jorge, coming to fetch us for the tour

There was a manatee nearby!

Those spots on the tree are tiny bats, for realz.

We explored the village/campus while waiting for the wee train to come fetch us.

Wooden dugout boats

I love this picture.  My Honduran kid, shirtless and sucking a water bag.

With the help of a Canadian foundation they were replanting mangroves.

A completely barren beach is just a few minutes away.

 "Puppies!"

I learned how to tell the difference between a caiman and a crocodile.
Good party trick.

 Charming

The little train is back!

This time with soldiers

Weird warpy action

School kids hitched a ride home and some raced the train

The woman in the picture is the teacher who commutes to work on the little train.
She teaches the whole village and is also hugely pregnant.  Kudos.
You can also see JA and Gussy in the conductor's car.

Joel, the 18 year-old soldier.  This is Bine's "I don't want to pose with the soldier" face.

Where Gussy napped

Waking up

Where the little train naps

On the chicken bus back to La Ceiba

JA took us to the new kiddy amusement park

We ate lunch at a seafood restaurant. The entire staff was sitting in the waiting area and watching telenovelas, which may explain the quality of the food.

Grocery store.  They soon started bludgeoning each other for control of the steering wheel.

The nice park next to the grocery store.
Pretty much the only place in Ceiba for kids to run around.

I'm mean.  He liked it for a second, I swear.
